Eco-conscious living is more popular then ever! By incorporating sustainable materials and recyclable products into our homes as well as supporting the philosophies and beliefs of an eco-lifestyle, we are making positive changes and improvements to our planet. With all of the wonderful green products at our fingertips these days, it can be overwhelming to really understand what these "green" labels mean?

As we are winding up Green @ Home month at Apartment Therapy, here's a brief description of the most common "green" logos and certifications plus a few notes to help you feel comfortable that you are buying and using "green" products in your home.

1/ RECYCLE: This seal notes that the product can be collected, separated, or recovered from the solid waste stream and used again.

2/ ENERGY STAR: An EPA certification with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency.

3/ WATER SENSE: Certifies water-efficient products such as faucets and toilets.

4/ LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design): Promotes sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, sustainable materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

5/ DESIGNED FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: This seal was introduced by the EPA to indicate that products contain environmentally friendly ingredients.

6/ GREEN SEAL: This sign indicates the environmental impacts tied to the use, manufacture, and disposal of products and services.

7/ FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL: Products that bear the FSC logo are guaranteed to contain wood or wood products harvested from a certified, well-managed forest.

Make sure the product or builder has evidence to back up their usage of a seal. Companies make claims that their products are green by including supportive evidence and certifications. Just do a bit of research if the information is not present on the box or about the material.
