Earth Day at the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian Institution's new ecocenter site went up today in honor of Earth Day. One thing worth revisiting is the Low Impact Living Index calculator we've blogged before. (Done that one? See how your score on the Consumer Consequences calculator compares.) There's more on the site worth checking out, too...

...but we'll admit, it's hard to resist the lure of a green living score! We ended up with a 61... not too bad, but all our good intentions were done in, as usual, by our travel habit. (It's hard to bicycle to Europe!)

At the end, the calculator (the link's on the left side of the page, about halfway down) pops up a score and a list of low-impact things you could do to green your home.

One thing it recommended for us: replacing our jurassic-era dishwasher with an efficient modern model. Key: the calculator shows the savings based on the information you enter. Replacing our overworked dishwasher would save us $53 per year in water and energy -- meaning it would basically pay for itself in 8 to 10 years.
