Gifts That Showcase Your Civic Pride

After yesterday's Ork Posters post, we got to thinking about other ways to share our love of city (and state!) with locals and transplants alike. And while we may call Portland home, these suggestions work for gift-giving no matter where you spend your holidays.

First up, we love Maptote, which captures a city's essence on a simple cotton tote, perfect for grocery shopping. Sure, they've got Portland, but you'll also spot Boston, Chicago, Miami, Philly and many more hometowns across the country. And for the PDXers who noted that Ork's Portland poster didn't show our rivers and bridges, we're glad to report that Maptote managed to get 'em all in.

If you're looking for a gift that will keep friends and family warm during winter weather, check out NeighborHoodies. Look for the "original" hoodie with hand-stitched lettering and pick your place from cities all over the world. From there, you'll get a slightly smaller selection of individual neighborhoods and, in some cases, small towns with unusual names. Case in point: Portlanders can pick from Laurelhurst and Buckman, or funny state faves like Boring and Zig Zag.

Those who think books make the perfect present might be interested in Crown Journeys' series of "literary travel books," which pair well-known writers with different cities around the world. You can see a list -- which includes Chicago, New Orleans and Austin -- right here.

But for those in the City of Roses, we can't help but recommend our personal pick...Chuck Palahniuk's Fugitives and Refugees. It so perfectly captures Portland's quirkiness and, though it might need to be updated for '09 (RIP Cafe Lena), it's still chock-full of places that we've never been but would love to explore. Self-cleaning house, anyone?

So do you have a favorite gift, given or received, that showcases your civic pride? Share below!
