Location: Stoke Newington, London
Size: 500 square feet
Years lived in: Rented for a year

Tucked behind the indie shops, vintage boutiques and artisan delis in Stoke Newington in London, is Sarah and Mike's modern minimal home. The converted warehouse apartment has kept its original exposed brick wall, but is softened by lots of beautiful artwork and interesting objects, like vintage bows, handmade ceramic vases and hand-painted woodblocks.

The couple is pretty handy themselves. Sarah reupholstered an old kitchen stool (which they got for free from a Greek restaurant) in red leather to give it a new life. Mike made the really quirky loo roll holder from an old Christmas tree. They also made the table for Sarah's studio with pieces of plywood and folding saw legs from eBay.

"The dream would be to have a very minimally furnished flat with a lot more greenery creeping everywhere," Sarah says. Whilst sometimes the 'minimalist' look can be quite clinical, what we've got in this flat is an urban oasis influenced by Japanese clean lines, Scandinavian design and modern minimalism. It's so calm and serene, I almost forgot we're in London.
