Name: Vicki Sleet and Justin Spreckley, with four children aged 17 to 2 months.
Location: Muizenberg — Cape Town, South Africa
Size: 250 square metres
Years lived in: Owned 6 years

Interior stylist, journalist and blogger Vicki Sleet is known for her love of DIYs and finding a good bargain. She even has a series on her blog, aptly named Bargain Betty. Naturally, you'll find evidence of her handiwork and upcycled projects throughout their home.

When they bought the 1940s house, it was a rabbit warren of rooms and small windows. Vicki and Justin basically gutted it, taking down as many internal walls as possible to open up the living area. They also added two bedrooms and an en-suite bathroom to the main bedroom. Nine months later and the result was a home with a fantastic open-plan flow. Since then Vicki has tackled various mini revamps and most recently redesigned and moved the children's bedrooms around in anticipation of the arrival of baby Ava.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Contemporary, quirky, colorful and friendly

Inspiration: Color, print and pattern play a major part in this home. Justin was initially a little skeptical about my love of major color pops but he's grown to love using color himself.

Favorite Element: We love the central kitchen island — it's where we always end up hanging out as a family and when we entertain.

Biggest Challenge: I am very sound sensitive and since we have wooden floors, sound travels very easily in the house. Justin struggles with the fact that I am messy and that I seem to "grow" piles of stuff on surfaces throughout our home.

What Friends Say: I think people tend to initially be quite surprised about the amount of color we've used in our home but we've had some lovely feedback about what a happy home it is.

Biggest Embarrassment: We have an enormous pot plant holder in our dining room – I hate it. It looks like an oversized cannon that's been sawn off and turned into a plant holder.

Proudest DIY: I love a paint job and transforming various cheap and cheerful wooden items with paint was very gratifying.

Biggest Indulgence: The quartz counter tops in the kitchen. We lived without counters for a few months when we moved in after renovating as we couldn't afford the quartz we wanted and I couldn't commit to anything else. After 11 different (and expensive) quotes I eventually found a supplier who could install at a decent price.

Best Advice: Live in a space before you commit to renovating it.

Dream Sources: Both Justin and I love looking for stuff on Gumtree — his favorite keywords are "desperate sale" — he's found many a bargain as a result.
