Name: Heather and Jonathan Sielaff and their cats, Britches and Hoover
Location: Portland, Oregon
Size: 800 square feet
Years lived in: 1.5

For Heather and Jonathan Sielaff, their 800-square-foot apartment boasts two major advantages: the incredible amount of natural light that streams in the big windows throughout the unit, and the ridiculously short commute it affords them. Their shop, Milk Milk Lemonade, and the workspace for their fragrance brand, OLO, are right downstairs. (Be sure to stay tuned for a tour of that equally bright and beautiful space in the coming weeks!)

The design direction of the Sielaffs' space has not only been dictated by what appeals to their tastes, but also by what will be the most cat-friendly option for their two beloved furry friends, Britches and Hoover. They have also made sure to incorporate a few earthy touches into their home, gathering inspiration from their travels to warmer climates as well as the legendary scenery of the Pacific Northwest. Their flourishing plant collection is a testament to the generous amount of light that the apartment receives each day and brings a refreshing levity to the entire space.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: West Coast, Mid-Century, No Money, Cat-Proof

Inspiration: Our natural surroundings in the NW, other cool places we’ve traveled or lived, friends with good taste, and old movies.

Favorite Element: Our apartment is in the southwest corner of the building with big windows. Light is a hot commodity in the Pacific NW and the fact that we are on an upper floor facing this direction maximizes the amount we get.

Biggest Challenge: Figuring out where to store furniture/art/rugs we love or are attached to but that don’t work with our current décor or space limitations.

What Friends Say: “So much light!” “These chairs are actually really comfortable,” “What’s your wifi password?”

Biggest Embarrassment: We haven’t done anything at all with the bathroom or kitchen. It’s been on the list for a while, but we haven’t been up to the challenge as of yet.

Proudest DIY: No major DIY projects in this apartment at the moment. We spend a lot of time on our store and have been waiting until that feels finished before any larger scale projects in the home.

Biggest Indulgence: Art and a few design-focused furniture purchases.

Best Advice: Go with what makes you feel good rather than what you think is fashionable.

Dream Sources: We’ve always wished we could get some really amazing rugs, but the cats have prevented that from being a practical reality. The more expensive or loved a rug, the more they love to tear it up!
