Name: Alex Earl and Dinesha Gunatillake
Location: Richmond, Melbourne, Australia
Size: 120 square meters (1200 square feet)
Years lived in: 6 months

Having only lived in this apartment for 6 months, Alex and Dinesha have already made this apartment feel very homey. WithAlex being a furniture designer and maker, their home is filled with a lot of his work, while Dinesha has brought in Moroccan flavours. They've successfully overcome some of the issues of renting- busy granite tiles calmed by using a rug and some of Alex's diecut lamps brightening up the poor built-in lighting.

AT Survey:

My/Our style: The majority of the things in our apartment are furniture and experiments I have made over the last few years. My girlfriend has collected things from morocco and other places, which I think sit quite well with my furniture.

Inspiration: I find myself ceaselessly making things, and anything I don't sell or don't want to sell ends up here.

Favorite Element: I really like the bedroom, it's got massive windows which let in morning light- we've left the walls bare so we can wake up with just the blue sky and white walls.

Biggest Challenge: The granite floor tiles- they're so busy and cold, we had to find a floor-covering to quieten them down a bit- the rug downstairs is a remnant of some good quality industrial carpet, which works well to break up the granite riot.

What Friends Say: 'wow, it's a bit too clean for you…'

Proudest DIY: probably the sofa, which I finished just in time for the shoot, it's massive and amazingly comfortable- it's like a second and third bed.

Biggest Indulgence: My record collection, I can't help buying them.

Dream Source for Stuff: Ideally I'd like to make a different piece of furniture every few days, and have it appear in the apartment, without having to transport it, and for one of the pieces I've had enough of looking at for a while to disappear into someone else's home.

Appliances: Dishwasher & Stove- smeg

Furniture: Mostly my own pieces- - with the barcelona chairs and the sofa upstairs is from ikea

Accessories: All sorts of bits and pieces- objects from morocco and sri lanka, rejects from my workshop- a roller bearing, books…

Lighting: The apartment has down-light set into the ceiling, and the, lamps are my own

Window Treatments: Our textile window treatments were custom designed and manufactured by Sol Window Coverings. We also have a few window coverings by Smith & Noble.

Beds: Our bed is one of my puzzle beds in hoop pine plywood.

Artwork: Most of the artwork is by local Melbourne artist Carolyn Roberts- she does amazing work in collage, watercolour, oils, pencil, as well as sculptural pieces.

(Thanks Alex!)
