Name: Alina, Joey, Vice Cooler, and Sean
Location: Berkeley
Size: 4 bedroom, 2 bath house
Years lived in: Alina: 4 years, Joey: 1 1/2 years, Sean: 1 year, Vice: 8 months

Alina, Joey, Sean, and Vice's colorful and creative Berkeley home is far from the modern, sleek, and chic houses we often feature on our house tours. But that's exactly what we love about it. It exemplifies a DIY lifestyle and a punk sensibility that's completely fitting for these unique and dynamic artists. Filled with hand-me-downs, off-the-sidewalk cast-offs, and handmade items, theirs is a cozy home for creative minds to find a restful retreat and a fun, communal spot for friends and touring musicians and artists to gather.

A long term Berkeleyite, Alina has a deep appreciation for nature and the supernatural, which is apparent in the house's animal themed-decor and the crystals you'll find in her room. Joey, Vice, and Sean are all Alabama transplants, but they've made themselves at home in the East Bay underground art scene. Joey is a video artist and painter, Sean is in a band called Difference Engine, and Vice is in bands XBXRX, K.I.T., and Hawnay Troof. Mysticism, art, and music... As the residents of this unique home say: "How Berkeley Can You Be?"

AT Survey:

My/Our Style: Our home is shared by four housemates, so our style is a confluence of each of our creative personalities. The general theme is an appreciation for comfort, nostalgia and color. This is evoked by vintage and hand-made decorations, plush couches and brightly painted walls.

Inspiration: We want our house to be a comfortable place to share with friends and guests. Whether we're hosting a game of Apples 2 Apples, enjoying a BBQ, or providing a warm, cozy space for a traveling friend and touring band to spend the night, we try to create a fun environment.

Favorite Element: Our Color Scheme.

Biggest Challenge: The biggest challenge is creating space for all of our ideas (and things) to work together.

What Friends Say: Everyone who has stayed here has commented on how much they like it.

Biggest Embarrassment: Because there are so many of us living here, clutter can gather quickly.

Proudest DIY: Adding a fourth room, painting the living room and hallway, and converting an oversized vintage radio cabinet into our turntable station.

Biggest Indulgence: There is a jacuzzi bath tub in the master bathroom!

Best Advice: "How Berkeley Can you Be?"

Dream Source: Something awesome gets left out on the curb and we find it.

Window Treatments: Most of the curtains are handmade. Some by Joey, and some by Cheryl Christian.

Beds: Ikea children's loft bed. Its essential in order to have space to live and work.

Artwork: Vice has original works by Kim Gordon, Jessalyn Aaland, Steve Keene, and posters by UTR in London, Paul Morgan, Matt Hart, and Seri Pop. He also has a framed t-shirt worn by Fred Thomas throughout most of his performances from 1999- 2007, and framed autographed photos of Bill Clinton and the original cast of Passions. Also in the house are pieces by Christina Seashore, Liz Harris, Todd Donahue, Ajay Reed, John Cummins, Jessica Efstratis, Kelly Lynn Jones, Cheryl Christian, Amy Fyrdundel, Nicole Neditch, Sarah Han, Rory Rabut, Lance Simmons, and Rachel Higgins, along with our own works and thrift store finds.

(Thanks, Alina, Vice, Joey, and Sean!)
