LA Good Questions: Living Room Help

The questions are trickling in again, with the first one from AT reader Jess who wants advice about beautifying her living room into something more "fabulous and fun":

I really need help making my living room more fabulous and fun. Right now it's ... well .. boring! It's a pretty small space, and it doesn't get a lot of light despite the big window, so I thought I'd put in a brown accent wall and leave the rest white. (We're moving in a couple years and I don't want to re-paint the entire house, which is why I wanted to just do an accent wall.) I'm not so sure it's working though!

I like the blue curtains and pillows (and we have an interesting purple accent chair that's not pictured), and we're ordering a very colorful Swallowfield print (blue, green, pink, brown, orange, etc!). I'd really like to know what it would take to give my space more of a personality. I was thinking of doing a pink accent wall instead of the brown, or of adding lots of colorful pink, orange and blue pillows. I'm pretty clueless about decorating ... help!!!

Two quick recommendations before we hand this question over to our helpful and knowledgeable readers: 1) use of mirrors, strategically placed to open up the visual perception of a smaller space. Mirrors will also reflect that precious sunlight, which also in turn makes a space seem larger and will allow the colours you want noticed to stand out rather than fade into the shadows.

Our second bit of advice upon quick glance is incorporating artwork that compliments the decor you already have. Of course, original artwork is the best, but affordable reproductions, prints and other alternative wall adornments are always a budget option.

And of course, we always recommend readers to go back into our collection of House Tours to find ideas and inspirations that they can apply to their own homes.
