101108-hng01.jpgIn a time of uncertainty and flux, where the stock market has hit record lows this week, staying home, enjoying our homes, becomes important. Here on AT, we've started the fall session of our bi-yearly Home Cure to help you create a beautiful, healthy home. Living green in both senses of the word -- economically and in harmony with the planet - is one component of that. Green buildings, especially those furnished in an eco-friendly manner and located in walkable neighborhoods, save green in both ways. The feature story in this week's Los Angeles Times Home and Garden Section spotlights just such a building downtown, the EVO buildings. More details, pics and links, after the jump...

EVO: Downtown's New Green Condos: Showcasing today, the EVO buildings, a group of sustainably built condos on Grand Street in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, illustrate how living green can be done stylishly and economically. Kitchens are modern, but restrained, common materials are used in unique ways, a sense of humour comes into play. Check out the tour this afternoon which includes a discussion by Frances Anderton, the host of KCRW's monthly series, DnA: Design and Architecture, and Dwell's LA edtior. Click here for details!

Fingerprint-Scan Deadbolt Can Eliminate the need for Keys: When we purchased our IPhone, we mentioned to a friend that it would be perfect if it also eliminated the need for carrying cash and keys (we also wish it had a mirror app). The LA Times put this lock, which we highlighted a few months back, into its test lab. Considering it's on sale at Home Depot (Gregory, take note), it might be time to consider installing it.

Gerald Colcord's homes still beloved in these modern times: Though not as well known as his contemporaries Wallace Neff or Paul Wlliams, Gerald Colcord's homes are still beloved of his clients and others with a passion for classic Southern California homes. A new book by Bret Parsons spotlights his work for an audience that's just discovering him.

Modern Objets d'Art are on the auction block: Two recent auctions, one by Wright in Chicago and another by Doyle New York, featured an array of beautiful items.

Design Within Reach adds Tools for Living Store: The Scout highlights the DWR Annex that opened last week; we also dropped by.
