Look! Dual Flush Toilet for $199 at Costco

We were at Costco yesterday, picking up move-in supplies for the new place. We couldn't help but notice the increasing number of green (or green-ish) products in the aisles. Still, it was surprising to see a dual-flush toilet. The brand is WaterRidge, and it sells for $199 at our Costco in Richmond, California.

We don't have any, um, experience with this toilet, so we surfed over to Terry Love's plumbing site and to GardenWeb, where people get downright obsessive over toilets. (If you've ever had a toilet that doesn't flush reliably, you know the obsession is justifiable.) Here's what we found out.

  • The dual flush is 1.1 gallon for the "lite" flush and 1.6 gallon for the full flush. That's on the high end; Caroma toilets, for example, use just .8 gallon for the partial flush.

  • The MAP rating, which measures how much a toilet can effectively flush, is 150 for the Costco toilet; Caroma models, on the other hand, have higher ratings of between 500 and 900.

  • The one person on the forums who actually has this toilet seems to like it.

Our bottom line? It's a good deal, but not a great one. A better buy is the better-performing Caroma Tasman 270, which can be had for around $300.
