Midwest #35: Ian & Monica's Colorful Vibe

What inspired you to use color? Our neighborhood – an old fashioned German village with sweeping views of Cincinnati's modern skyline – is incredibly eclectic and vibrant. We tried to continue Mainstrasse's colorful vibe in our home. Though we're definitely influenced by design blogs and décor magazines, our home's palette is built around a few vintage family treasures.

Inspiration continued:My grandmother's table linens – with their rich blues and greens - provide lots of color inspiration. My uncle's yellow lamps – in all their 1968 glory - anchor our otherwise white bedroom. Until our budget allows us to recreate a DWR showroom in all it's stark white fabulousness, we'll use color to bring life and warmth to our home. In the meantime a coat of glossy white paint never fails to resurrect a Craigslist find. Given the state of our economy, we're perfectly content to stay in with a bottle of wine and a galloon of paint.

Color Tip: The inaugural issue of Domino made a pretty great statement: "Renters don't have to be second-class citizens." While we look forward to owning our own place, we refuse to postpone making a mark on our home. My soul would shrivel up and die if I was forced to live in a white and beige box. In our search for an apartment, we've walked away if the landlord didn't allow us to paint. If forced to choose, it's worth sacrificing some major conveniences for a little character, big windows, and ample light. Once you find that perfect apartment be mindful of how rooms flow together. Make sure your color choices are cohesive thru the entire space. Our first floor uses blues and greens, while the upstairs transitions to grays and browns. Carrying an accent color throughout your home – think flowers or art - can help make things work.

Colors Used: Valspar: Olive Grove (kitchen), Bittersweet (sitting room), Classic Teal with extra black added (pantry) Behr: Ultra Pure White (bedroom)

Welcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote til you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell
