Last Saturday we headed to Winnetka for a demolition auction hosted by Murco. Although the (sad) impending demolition of the 1910 Prairie style home by architect John L. Hamilton...
...has made news for a while, the home's contents were now ready to find new owners, even if the home itself couldn't. After sitting on the market for two years, all pieces were up for grabs - including a great swinging interior door, French doors, leaded stained glass windows, a Frigidaire 6-burner stove, and Maytag washer/dryer set (to name just a few). We walked away with the washer/dryer ($300), some utility shelves ($15), dozens of day lilies ($10), and a vintage hanging yellow lamp ($5).
How it works: The auction process was fairly casual: After a walk-through to view items at 9 a.m., you then register by paying $5 and get a number assigned for bidding. At 10 a.m. the "auction" begins with ring leader Jodi asking where people would like to start. First up: doors upstairs. Who's interested in door #1? Two couples raised their hands in interest, and Jodi then announces her starting price (for this, $100). The first couple raised their number while the second couple declined bidding after hearing the starting price. Done. Moving on.
As we roamed around the home, folks drifted in and out of the group, depending on interest level. At any point you can ask Jodi to come check out an object of interest, then you start negotiating. The informality, yet clear professionalism and experience, made our first Murco recycling auction experience a good one. We'll likely do it again. Anyone else??
