Phillips de Pury Presents: Saturday@Phillips

Buying art can be scary. Bidding on art at an auction can be even scarier. Phillips de Pury is trying to make the process increasingly kindler and gentler with Saturday@Phillips. It's their relatively recent effort to get regular people to buy and collect art and one of a kind design pieces for their home. It's held 4 Saturdays per year, with a social atmosphere more akin to a gallery opening, thus making it more enticing for the lay person to partake....

The next one is being held in their new London showroom on March 15th. If you don't plan to be on the other side of the Atlantic in two weeks, Phillips de Pury has made it easy to participate via their live online auction site. You'll need to register first to bid.

It's always easiest to start collecting something you are viscerally drawn to and about which you know a fair amount. The upcoming Saturdays at Phillips has over 380 lots for sale, and in addition to a lot of well known artists' work, there are works by a wide range of well known furniture designers that could both serve a function and ooze beauty into your home.

Phillips de Pury has also set up a blog-like site for learning the ropes of the art world--replete with forums, gossip, and games as well as some rather bizarre videos by Simon de Pury himself.

If you are buying art as an investment, research the artist/designer to learn about where their work has been shown, how much the work sells for, and the galleries with which the artists have been affiliated. Thanks to the awesome internet, this should be a relatively painless process with instant and informative results. If you are buying a work of art because you like it, then go with your instinct, and trust the curators who put together the gallery show, art auction, or expo. And never forget to embrace the long-proven edict that beauty is always in the eye of the beholder!
