This Weekend: This Life Lesson Keeps Your Kitchen Under Control

When you think of the areas in life that are out of control, there's one particular spot that consistently stands out as cluttered and overflowing. What's worse is that it's an endless cycle of stuff, and it's usually in the heart of the home — your kitchen. Empty crushed cans, piles of newspaper, junk mail, and empty wine bottles are the problem, and an organized recycling center is the solution. This weekend, learn what you need and get organized.

This Weekend's Assignment: Set up your home recycling system to keep it simple, clean, and organized.

Assess Your Recycling Situation: A lot of recycling stations are in the kitchen, which makes a lot of sense since a lot of packaging and waste originates there. Decide if you want to tuck all that material out of sight in the pantry or cabinet, or if you prefer it stays accessible and out in the open. Measure your space before choosing a recycling bin option.

Buy or DIY Your New System: What you need depends on a number of things: 1) whether your collection service or station accepts single stream or separated recycling; 2) what you use most, i.e. do you have a diet coke addiction?; and 3) the space where you decide to store it all. Based on all those factors, decide how many bins or containers you need, and what size you can accommodate. Once you get everything home, label your bins so everyone knows what goes where.

Remember, as with all of our Weekend Projects, just do what you have the time and energy to do. And hey, if you don't feel like wrangling all your wrappers and trash, choose one of our other weekend projects to get done.
