Karine is an interior stylist and founder of Matte & Glossy. She is also a color junkie, a decor consultant, a blogger, and an avid traveler. She lives with her husband Danick and their son Louis in this charming 1954 bungalow in Old Longueuil. Their home is her creative playground.

Right from beginning, when Karine first saw this home, she knew it was theirs. The walls were pink and the house had this incredible energy. Plus, there was a vintage bar in the basement, an exact replica of her grandparents’ one! Karine was charmed. It’s now been nine years since they first bought their home and started adding their personality to the space with every project. A new extension was added to the home in 2015 to give the family more space, but whether it was a big renovation or just adding in new decor, they’ve always respected the house’s architectural history. The decor remains eclectic, playful, and colorful.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Eclectic with a Mexicali vibe.

Inspiration: The house is great source of inspiration! Built in 1954, it was the exact copy of my grandparents’ house… our love for retro and vintage (especially the ’60s) is reflected in the decoration of the house. We have kept as much as possible of the original architectural elements, like the bar in the basement that keeps our guests happy! I also take a lot of inspiration from our trips mostly to California (hello, Palm Springs!) and Mexico.

Favorite Element: The new extension of the house was added and built in 2015. A room without TV is relaxing. We enjoy looking at the view from its huge windows or watching Louis doing his break dance shows.

Biggest Challenge: All main rooms are on one level, so hello, proximity. The rooms have to not be messy because we can see the mess from all angles! Luckily we are a small family.

What Friends Say: ”It feels good at home,” the most beautiful compliment! The vibe wins over the look.

Biggest Embarrassment: I can not believe I’m an interior stylist and chose these materials for my bathroom! (Not shown in the pics—Thank God!). Okay it’s been nine years but still… I’m already dreaming of my next reno…

Proudest DIY: The styling using various little objects. They all have a story. Throughout the house you can find small decorative vignettes that remind me of a particular memory. I am a melancholy soul and we can see it in my decor.

Biggest Indulgence: I have a lot of difficulty answering this question because we never really did! I’ve dragged my furniture with me since my first apartment or I buy most of it second hand! Also, when we bought the house, we bought some of the vintage furniture from the previous owners. Because of my job I also had the chance to make beautiful collaborations, which allows me to receive beautiful objects from my peers.

Best Advice: Surround yourself with objects that make you happy. These must remind us of a wonderful memory… even if they are new, choose them carefully and positively.

Dream Sources: Everything from Anthropologie, Roar and Rabbit, Cathy Terepocki’s Ceramics, and Stella Ceramics Workshop, and everything from Revolucion Del Sueno.
