Building on a Budget: Community Center by Studio Gang

Designed by Studio Gang Architecture, the Lavezzorio Community Center in SOS Children's Village on the South Side of Chicago was built, in part, from donated materials like the exterior concrete. Working within a limited budget, the firm designed a striated facade that gives the center character and makes use of the various types of concrete. On the inside, smart space planning makes the building multi-functional...

An extra-wide central stairway doubles as seating, a multi-purpose great room serves neighborhood residents, and the space under the stairs provides several reading nooks for children.

Our favorite detail is the wall of yellow shelving and cubbies in the main room. In the midst of a volatile economy, this building is a reminder that high design is possible within a budget.
